Mom’s terror when the plane passenger tries to open the door in the air: ‘Start praying!’

A distraught mother says she thought her family was going to die when an apparently drunk and deranged passenger tried to open a plane door in the middle of a flight from Cyprus to the UK.

The “terrifying” airborne drama took place aboard a Tui Airways flight on Tuesday, about halfway through the five-hour journey.

“The [the combatant passenger] I was trying the emergency exit doors to try to get out of the plane,” Melissa Brown, 32, told Kennedy News. “Everyone started screaming and yelling, ‘Help, we’re going to die!’ It was as if he wanted to kill us all; It was absolutely terrifying.”

Brown, who had been on vacation in Paphos, Cyprus, with her partner and their two children, was traveling back to her home in Manchester, England, when she noticed an “aggressive” man on board the plane who was constantly pacing the aisles and disappearing in the bathroom.

“It was disturbing and making people agitated and scared,” Brown said. “My daughter was really nervous and upset that we could tell that she was intoxicated, definitely while she was swinging and things like that.”

The mother claimed that a flight attendant approached her and told her that they were “having difficulties” with the man and that he had been threatening them.

“All of a sudden, he just jumped in the middle of the plane near the emergency exit and started waving his hands at everyone, praying really loudly in a different language,” Brown said.

“In English, he would say things like, ‘Everyone should start praying. I’ll see you all in heaven,’” she recalled.

Brown said other passengers began screaming, grabbing their children and running to the rear of the plane.

Meanwhile, a group of male travelers tried to overpower the deranged man, one hitting him in the back of the head and several others subsequently working to restrain him.

Two men, who were off-duty police officers, managed to lock the man in a seat until the pilot was able to trigger an emergency landing.

“The pilot made a very fast descent to a Croatian airport. We were literally falling out of the sky,” Brown said. “He was really traumatic.”

The man’s name has not been released by Croatian or British media. It is unclear if police are pressing charges for the aviation emergency.

The Post has reached out to Tui for more information.

In a separate press release, the UK budget airline stated: “The health and safety of our customers and crew is always our top priority and due to a disruptive passenger the flight was forced to divert to Zagreb, Croatia. The passenger was unloaded, received by the police and will not be traveling with Tui when the flight leaves later today. We take a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive behavior on our flights.”

Brown said she and other Tui passengers were stranded at the empty airport after the late-night makeshift landing.

“When we got off the plane they took us to the airport and left us there. There were no representatives from Tui, the airport was closed,” Brown complained. “There was no one to help us, so for seven hours all the passengers and children slept on towels on the cold floor of the airport.”

Several other passengers took to Twitter to complain about the situation, seeming more concerned about delays to their trips than the fact that a madman had nearly taken their lives.

Brown, meanwhile, was thankful that she and her family are safe, but said the ordeal left her traumatized.

“It was terrifying,” he declared. “I think I’ve done all my crying now; I can’t cry anymore.”
